Mattanpan is right, but let me answer your question presented in the way that you wanted:

P + 0.06P = 6.35
P (1 + 0.06) = 6.35
P (1.06)/(1.06) = 6.35/1.06
P = 5.99

The price is $5.99. The mathematic equation would be 6.35 * .94.
But the proof is if the price is $5.99 and there is a 6% sales tax, the tax would be 36 cents. .36 + 5.99 = $6.35
