I'm confused because i read somewhere that a person has GID but is not homosexual. But when i read the symptoms of GID it sounds homosexual to me. Are they just trying to medicalize the term homosexual?

No, it's totally different.

Let's go slowly.

A gay, or homosexual, man is a man who enjoys being a man and is happy to be one. He would not change that status, even if he acts a bit effeminate (and not all or even most gay men do.) He relates to and enjoys sex with other men who are happy to be men.

A male-born person with GID doesn't feel right about being a man. He feels like a woman in a man's body. He hates his penis. (A gay man would never consent to a surgery involving its amputation and rearrangement!) He wants to *be* a woman, all the time.

Big difference.

GID is something completely different - although there was a time when it was assumed to be the cause of homosexuality (that was back when homosexuality was still officially considered a mental illness.)
Homosexuality is defined as being predominately attracted to people of the same sex as you are; but one can have GID and also be attracted to either or even both sexes. It only sounds homosexual because society tends to assume that cross-gender behaviour (ie guys acting like girls or vice versa) is homosexual, which is pretty much a weak stereotype.

Not everyone who experiences GID is homosexual. In fact, at least among crossdressers, a good majority of us are heterosexual (sex here referring to their birth gender, their genetic sex).

There was a movement about 15 years ago to split transgender people into two categories: those who have "true" GID and are attracted to the same sex, and those with "autogynephilia" who are straight but sexually turned on by the idea of being the opposite sex. That, and general misinformation out there about transgenderism in general, are probably why you came to the conclusion you did.

But the community has pushed back against these classifications, mainly because there are so many of us out there who like the opposite sex *and* cross gender boundaries for non-sexual reasons. By those standards, we shouldn't exist -- but we do.

Also, requiring same-sex attraction for a GID diagnosis enforces a strictly hetero mindset...defining ones gender by who one finds attractive, which would mean lesbians aren't really women and gay men aren't really men, which is preposterous.

GID.....is NOT a homosexual thing. it is a medically recognized disorder that in my personal case is something that took a lifetime of suffering to realize that i really WAS different and i am now free to "fix the problem". as far as "medicalizing" the homosexual, absolutely not, they are 2 totally different things.

No GID is where someone thinks they are the wrong gender. They may be attracted to the same gender as themselves but once they have the operation, it will be the opposite gender.

completely different, because in some cases you have a Heterosexual Male to female gender reassignment...and that person still loves the company of women. But he himself is now a women thus meaning he/she is a lesbian...
