Septic tanks are made and designed to accumulate solids. this happens in two zones- heavy solids sink to the bottom and lighter solids like grease float on top. There is no way to avoid buildup. However, you should have a septic tank pumped out occasionally, I do the one on my house every 5 years because I have much control over what goes down there. I do the one at my rental every three years cause I have less control.

You know, condoms can last a long time in a septic tank because there is always some in there everytime I pump it out and I haven't used one for years.

if you have a septic it is imperative to fix all faucet and toilet leaks immediately. a toilet leaking full blast can pump a thousand gallons of water a day down your septic system. if excess water enters the tank, it doesn't allow the solids enough time to settle and be digested, and you will be pumping solids out to your leach field which will eventually clog it up. it is a good idea to pump out the tank at least once every 5 years, and avoid using a garbage disposer if at all possible

If you have a septic as do we you also should not use fabric softener in the washing machine. It destroys the natural occurring bacteria that feed on the yuck down there and without them build up is much quicker. After all fabric softeners are only oil and fragrance. Which is why you should never use them in your wash cycle of towels. Towels that are softened have a coating of oil on them therefore they repel water instead of soaking it up when you dry off.
