It's very awkward (I say this from experience) because the natural comfort that exists between each of you as "just friends" goes away as a couple. I would say no. And breaking up can be painless or traumatic depending on how serious you guys were as a couple. So let's put it this way...starting a relationship with a best friend of the opposite sex is easy; ending it nicely is tough.

There is a risk of dating your best friend, but I'm happy to say I've been married to my best friend almost 8 years now.
So if you're old enough, it can work out. I don't suggest it if you're in high school... but I'm thrilled I didn't have to "take a chance" on someone - I knew all the good and bad, and accepted it for what it is/was... and still do.
I highly encourage it - again, not in highschool, but after.

Tough one...It depends (great answer, right?)...Well, I think you have to determine if one or both parties have those "feelings". If you both do, it can be hard to just ignore those feelings and you would always wonder "what if". I think it depends on your age, your experience, what you are looking for, etc. It can definitely work and can be amazing. It can also crash and burn and leave you wishing you never went down that road. You have to make sure you are on the same page and evaluate if you are willing to lose what you have. Sorry, not the best answer I am sure, but I hope you see both sides. I began dating a "good friend", not best, but good...and we are so happy together. I love the fact that we knew each other's quirks and didnt have the awkward getting to know each other phase.

yes you are right. if they break up, the friendship might not survive either.
my experience...ok so i had a best friend who was a guy. we liked each other, a lot. but our friendship meant so much more to us, so we didn't go out. after 2 years, we just fell for each other. we made a pact to hang out as bf/gf sometimes, and as friends sometimes. it worked! we were both getting the romantic part, and the platonic part. when we were in bf/gf mode, we pretended like we werent friends to begin w/. when we were friends we pretended we weren't romantically involved. wow it was amazing!
btw, i am 15 years old now. love

My husband and I have been married for 9+ years, dated 3 years before that, and were best friends for 3 years before that. We can fight like dogs, but we will always be best friends. I think it works out well.

it particularly is superb. it could actually be constructive to have a chum of the choice intercourse, using fact then you definately can get advice on issues a guy could not make it easier to recognize approximately. I say it particularly is in basic terms superb.
