I am getting a computer for my 11 yr old son to use for school. He will be using it for online research and projects. He will have to be able to download pictures and put them on MS word for his projects.
This is just a computer for him to use for the next 3-4 yrs until he's in high school and needs a better computer.

Just look for the best deals on a computer. He's not a heavy gamer, so it doesn't really matter which processor is in the box. Anymore, they are pretty much the same. I have both Intel and AMD. I have recently moved over to AMD since I have started building computers.

I am a fan of AMD.... My two PCs have AMD processors, a Athlon XP and a Opteron Dual Core. My old laptop (before the display gave out {still runs if i connect a display} ) is a AMD Duron. They are wonderful processors, preform well. I not go into the AMD vs Intel war because it changes as time goes by and new processors reach the market. AMD serves me well and I do put them under a strain sometimes with 3D graphics rendering, graphics processing and compiling program code.

Your computer for your son, since he would be mostly be doing school work, research and projects... etc etc etc are not processor intensive tasks that you need to make a choice between Intel and AMD, both would function very well for his demands. Further since this is only for 4-5yrs until he in high school, all you need to know is that the computer has a good reputation without crashing, and not what processor is installed. Unless you looking to buy a old pentium 200Mhz system, which is a pain if you plan to run Windows XP on it.

If it is a core 2 duo system then go for the intel. Intel in my oppinion is now cheaper for the same performance that you would get out of an amd so I would go with intel since you can probably find a better deal.

really does not matter. Both AMD and Intel will work fine, just look for the best deal. Remember you do not need a top of the line computer.

I would say definately AMD. Besides being a fan of AMD, I truely believe that for what you are looking for, that AMD's price to performance ratio is much better for you and your son. A much more cost effective choice.

My AMD Turion 64 in my notebook, or the AMD Athalon XP in my desk top have given me no trouble in two years.

With the new Core architecture, you can get a better computer at a better price with Intel.

Amd dropped their prices though
