To be a doctor, you need 4 years in college to get a BA or BS degree. After that, you go to med school, at which point you'd look at a "medical college."

You'd want to find a college or university where the name on the diploma will help you get into med school. For instance, I went to a small, but highly-respected college where most of the grads who wanted to go to med school got into med school, mostly due to the name on the diploma. Granted, that means that you'll work very very hard to earn your name on that diploma!!

So, figure out where you "fit in" college-wise. There is a world of difference between U of W Madison and, say, a small but prestigious liberal arts college. Both ideas work very well, but the difference to you in your sanity will be very significant.

i too live in WI. we have two great medical schools here. Madison is the best. However, it doesn't matter what type of doctor or surgeon you end up being, because as long as you care about your patients, and have a passion for your work...you will be a great doctor. Take as much math and science as you can. Especially chemistry. Ethics if you have time as well. See what the pre-med programs have to offer, and go from there. Word to the wise... going the pre-med route is chancy. Try to obtain a bachelor degree in science first, so you always have something to fall back on. You never know what can happen in life, this way if finishing medical school isn't happening as quickly, you can work for a year, save it, and live off it for four.

Do not obtain any unnecessary debt. Nobody cares what earings you have. Stick to the books, your determination will see you thru. And then when you are done and earning a paycheck, you can buy all the bloody earings youd like! Good Luck Chap!

Look into LECOM on the web - Lake Erie College of Medicine. It is located in Erie, PA and somewhere in Florida. It is one of the largest medical schools in the country. Many Erie colleges have a deal worked out with LECOM so that you can start medical school early. The first school (say Gannon University) has you take all the pre-requisites you need. After two or three years, rather than the typical four or more, you start medical school. After 1 or 2 successful years at the LECOM, Gannon gives you a BS.
