Almost anything will work, but for around a hundred or so dollars you can find something for her to learn on. Try having it strung with nylon strings. It will be easier on her fingers and your ears.

One that won't do your head in when he's practising. My parents got my brother playing trumpet and trombone when he was about that age, not for long it was awful! Let him play what he wants or he will lose interest and you will have wasted your time and money. Good luck!
