I'm building a Dell pc. Which processor would be faster, AND WHY? What do they do differently????

Intel Core 2 Duo E6400
vs.
Pentium D 820 w/ Dual Core Technology

Everyone here is correct. The Core 2 Duo whips major but t. Dont touch the the other chip as it is hot and inefficient.

The Core 2 duo is a newer chip with newer technology and I would definately go for it. It is more efficient as far as power consumption and then they run cooler where an 820 running at 100% can warm up a room with ease. It utilizes a new processor architecture so that it is faster and is built with a smaller core. But as for performance in common programs I recommend that you check out Tom's Hardware cpu charts as they graph the performance difference. You can select both processors at the top and then select a program as well.

Oh BTW they are both dual core.

Core 2 Duo by a huge margin. Core 2 Duo is a much newer design, it's more efficient and just better all around.
