Undernourishment means someone isn't getting enough of any type of food; malnourishment means they're eating stuff that's bad for them, AS WELL AS not having enough to eat.

A person who is malnourished is not getting all the needed substances from what he eats (like the proper balance of vitamins, the right amino acids to make into human protein, and so on). Such a person may be getting enough calories to be fat, but isn't getting the _nourishment_ he heeds to be healthy. A person who is undernourished is not getting as much as he needs in the way of calories to supply energy. He may or may not also be _mal_nourished. Consider it this way: a person could slug down a pound of sugar a day, which would give a lot more calories than he needs, but since the sugar doesn't supply protein or vitamins he'd still be malnourished. On the other hand, another guy could pop vitamins and "dietary supplements" enough to have all the elements of a good diet, but if he isn't getting something to supply calories along with those pills he would be undernourished. RE:
What is the difference between malnourishment and undernourishment?

Malnourishment : It is the wrong food habits or improper diet. Many people think that malnourishment means only undernourishments, but obesity is also due to wrong food habits and comes under malnourishment

I think malnourishment is you are still eating things but the wrong things that aren't keeping you healthy and undernourishment is when you are not eating anything at all.

Mal means bad, so malnourishment is eating foods that are not good for you i.e " junkfood". Undernourishment is not getting enough nourishment for your body to function properly.

as i understand it mal means "not normal" so undernourishment, which means less supply of nourishment is a kind of malnourishment..same with overnourishment.

hope that made sense..

The way i understood it is actually in the words; mal (being bad) nourished, so the person can be wealthy and eating a lot but not getting the correct balance of food that they require and end up sick from eating too much junk food or greasy food.
Then under (not sufficiently) nourished is that there is not enough food available, and would lead to cases of hunger and starvation.
