You've got a broken belt, thats what is smells like when the belt breaks. Has happened to me 2 times before. Go to Kmart or walmart with information from your vacuum and find the right belt, should be very easy to replace. And try to cut the hair off of the brushes before using again, might be part of what made the belt break.

The belt for the brushes has heated up and broken. Thus the smell of burnt rubber. You need to figure out how to take the brushes out, clean them off while they are out, and also replace the drive belt. Make sure you get the correct size for your vacuum.

The belt that spins the brush is either off the axle or it has snapped. Some vacuums have additional belts self-stored. Other have belts sold separately. You will probably have to remove the bottom to either get the belt on the axle or replace the belt.
