EXPLAIN the difference between x=2.5 and x~ 2.5

plz help i dont get this math we get new math book and the stink!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

x=2.5 means that x IS 2.5. x~2.5 means that x is ABOUT 2.5 which means it could be like 2.512 or something similar.

x=2.5 means exactly 2.5 and x~2.5 means about 2.5
