are you referring to illegal immigration? then you could start by talking about getting into everyday things that they effect and then get into the larger aspects such as costing the government billions of dollars, hospitals not having enough money and having to close down, crime rates, etc.
if just immigration, talk about how they come here and start businesses or whatever and the reasons they came.

I just recently wrote a research paper on illegal immigration in the US. First, it would help if you wrote general topics in which you can expound on when you're writing it. For example, I wrote:

1) Why is there illegal immigration and how bad is it?
2) What effects do illegal aliens have in our economy?
3) How can we prevent the illegal alien population from growing?
4) What is the government's current policy on illegal immigration?
5) What reforms are in the process of being made to improve the situation of illegal immigration?

You need to focus your topic a little more -- immigration is a big topic. To focus your topic, think of a question you want to answer, for example, "What is the process for becoming a U.S. Citizen?" With a question to answer, you focus your ideas more on answering the question rather than addressing all areas of immigration. Good luck.
