It really depends on the babysitter. Sometimes, a twelve year old is too immature, but some times, they are great and very responsible with the kids. It varies from person to person really.

As far as tips, here are a few that helped me.
- Try to only babysit for family or family friends
- When you accept, make sure the house is in a residential area, that way, if a problem occurs, you can go to a neighbor for help
- Keep a cell phone with you, and make sure there are I.C.E. numbers (In Case of Emergency) like the police/sheriff's department, fire, hospital, and anyone that needs to be contacted like your parents or guardian should anything happen to you
- Ask expressly for where exactly the parents will be. It doesn't matter if they are going to some swanky resturaunt or a seedy little motel. This is so you can contact them in case something happens to the kids or if there is something that you absolutely have to leave for.
- Try and see if the parents will allow you to bring one friend with you to babysit. Explain that this is so that you can have an extra hand in case anything happens and, especially later in the evening or if it is your first time with that particular family, to keep you company so you will feel more comfortable in the house without an adult.

Also- Make sure you have the parents write down any kind of special instructions or so on. These things include: bedtime, any items you can't feed them, what time and type of TV, plus stuff like allergies or specifics that would be nessecary to tell a doctor should an accident occur!

I always bring something fun for the kids to do. It might be baking cookies(w/ parents permission), coloring, watching a movie so on. It's also nice if you spend a little out of your pocket to bring something fun (no more then like $5). For example I'm going out and buying clear glass ornaments so that we can paint them (squirt paint inside and whirl it around). Kids love it when the can make gifts for parent/family. Kids also love it when you join in the craft making/ fun=) Also, treat them like adults!
Hope these ideas help! good luck!

well it's okay to babysit...as long as you get paid for it.....it's good to start making your own money at a young age....then once you get older you'll know the responsiblities and would love money and cherish it more...good luck and keep it up
