We noticed that the cover coating the rear steel panel is rubbed through and bare metal is showing. Would there be some type of coating to put over this bare area?

If its the cover I'm thinking you are talking about, that is the waveguide cover, and you don't want to use your microwave without it, if those metal components get splashed by any grease or anything it could possibly start a fire in the microwave, you can go to a appliance repair company with your model number and have them order you a cover. Make sure you show them where it is in the microwave, to make sure they get you the right part, a lot of times they can even make you one, with a material called Micca. Or check out www3.sears.com, and look up your model number and check out the pictures to see what you are searching for and that will tell you what you need.

It is fine, only crinkled metal poses a problem in a micro-unit. Throw your cat in there to see if it still works properly

It is the presence of metal that shields you. Having paint on it or not does not improve its shielding. It is safe.

I have no idea but when mine did that I bought a new one but I say it is safe anyway.
