Relatively advanced Mesoamerican civilization in Central and Northern South America as well as Southern North America fomr the 14th to the 16the centuries. They were fierce warriors and conquered a great deal of that part of the area and most of the surrounding peoples were under their rule. Their culture was overthrown by the Spanish explorer Hernando Cortez in a quest for new land and wealth (he was looking for gold).
At the end of there empire it was believed that there were 10,000,000 people under their rule. The language they spoke was Nahuatl and it is a combination of that and classical Spanish taht has become the language spoken by the modern inhabitants of Mexico.
They believed, among other things, that human blood was the food of their Gods. Contrary to popular belief, most often only small amounts of blood were necessary; a few drops taken from their priests and nobility sufficed. It was only in times of great danger (War, Famine, Drought) that full on, large scale, human sacrifice was performed. Also, human sacrifice was a form of sacralized capitol punishment of criminals and prisoners of war (which is NO different than the executions carried out in modern prisons, especially when there is a religions figure, like a priest, sanctifying the participants).
Quetzlcoatl, the feathered serpent was the chief deity and the most well known, although they had an entire pantheon of deities. They also had a very strong tradition of magical practices, some of which have survived as part of modern Santeria and Bruheria.
There are modern practitioners of the Religion both in Mexico and in the US, although the religion is not officially recognized in either country (and yes they practice ALL the known forms of that religious worship including blood sacrifice).
Hows that?

They had a large round scuplture which today is called the Aztec Sun Stone or the Aztec Calendar stone. It's about 12 feet across. In the center is depicted the sun god. Around him is the symbol for 4 Ollin, which is the name of this world age. In the sun god's hands are sacrified hearts. Around the god, in a ring, are the symbols for the 20 day signs of the sacred calendar and also the 4 ages that already passed. There are more rings of information, including a ring of fire and a ring of stars, and the whole thing is enclosed in two fire serpents. There is a life-sized replica of it in Chankanaab Park on Cozumel.

They were incredibly vicious and human sacrifice wasn't unheard of. It was accepted as a normal practice to gain the blessings of the gods.

It is my personal belief that many of these temples were built for extra-terrestrial ships to land or hover over. Many were flat topped like helopads.(Star Wars?) Here is one site.
