George Reeves. He started in bit parts, mainly in cowboy movies. I remember him playing bad guys in Hopalong Cassidy.
Ended up shooting himself after the series ended, thus starting the curse of superman, where something bad happens to people who play the role (eg Christopher Reeve's accident, Dean Cain's career).

His name was George Reeves. No relation to Christopher Reeve. BTW, the show you're thinking of was from the '50s, not '60s.
