My most memorable Kwanzaa was one that occured two years ago. My family has a big celebration on one of the seven days and we usually invite my Godparents, my aunt and cousins, two friends and their family, and then maybe five other people who varied from year to year. In 2003, my mom had a falling out with the friends, so she decided not to invite them. My godparents didn't like that everyone wasn't invited, so they didn't want to come either. The only people who would be in attendance was my aunt and cousins.

For years, I've been trying to convince my birthmother and youngest sister to come here for the holidays. They never do. That year, they said they would. For the entire month leading up to the holidays, my birthmother was indescisive about whether or not she was coming. A week before they were due to arrive, I overheard (read: eavesdropped) a conversation in which she said she probably wasn't going to come. I sat heart-broken. I only get to see my birthmother and youngest sister once a year. I was looking forward to seeing them. I knew better than to hold my birthmother to her word, but I had already excited myself with seeing them. I was upset because so many people had already bailed out on our 12 year tradition and knew I was being let down again.

My mom talked her out of it. A week later, they arrived. Even though they only stayed two days, it was the best two days I can remember and certainly the most memorable holiday I'd had in years.
