I think the reason it was so popular and won Emmy Awards is simply because of the excellent writing and great acting. The characters were believable, and they seemed to have a great. rapport. And, let's face it, no matter how controlling our moms can be, it's hard to find one who is as domineering, yet lovable, as Marie.

For the same reason Cosby was so popular in the 80's....a nice, clean, genuinely funny comedy in which the male star is a stand-up comdian who knows how to make every day happenings hilariously funny.
Incidently, I remember wathing Larry King interview Mary Tyler-Moor and Dick Van Dyke about 8 years ago. When asked what sitcom most resembles what they did, they both said "ELR" :)

Because it is so real...it's what every family is. You would think that would make people not want to watch...hey, that's just the same as my crazy family, who cares right? But the actors truly pull it off. They make every disfunctional family seem funnier and always had great story lines. I loved that show. Wish it was still being produced.

I personally don't like to watch him unless I'm forced but I do like all the characters. They are hilarious.
