I am familiar with Iran's history, and with the 1979 Revolution, etc., but I want to know when the government of the Islamic Republic actually barred U.S. Citizens from traveling to Iran.

Thank you.

US citizens aren't barred to going to Iran and never have been barred...!
Iran's government has some problems with US government because its policy during the Revelation, war between Iran and Iraq and some other political matters.
But Iran had been never problems with US citizens.
If you are interested to take a trip to Iran you can do it by one of the Iran's embassies which is out of USA (Other countires).
As you know, Iran and US doesn't have any political dealing.

Good luck

I don't know when the travel ban ended, but there is currently no travel ban on Iran right now. Here's the US State Dept. info on getting in:

A passport and visa are required. You'll have to get a visa from the Iranian Interests Section of the Embassy of Pakistan, located at 2209 Wisconsin Ave. N.W, Washington, DC. 20007; tel 202-965-4990, 91, 92, 93, 94, 99, fax 202-965-1073, 202-965-4990 (Automated Fax-On-Demand after office hours). Their Internet Website is http://www.daftar.org (click on “View in English").

US citizens were officially barred from heading to the Islamic Republic of Iran was back in 1980 and was renewed in 2005

All of this in the name of safety due to the aspect of kidnapping, harassment, and very heavy anti-US sentiment. Also, the Iranian-US diplomatic ties are non-existing

Americans aren't barred from entering Iran and vice versa. It's not true. They just don't have diplomatic ties since the hostage crisis.
