Confederacy definitely lost. Slavery was the big issue dividing the states and the manufacturing based North (Union) was better capable of arms manufacture than the Confederate South.

Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was the final nail in the coffin for the African slaves because it provided them with a cause with which to fight against their taskmasters in the South.

The Union won, (Damn Yankees, or the Northerner), and the Southern folk lost their tails in that war. But we all lost because the industry suffered so bad it has reached into the future, and we have nothing left as far as manufacturers today they are mostly overseas and we import. That is not good. This war (civil) was not about the slaves, no one cared about the slaves, neither the Yankee or the Greycoats, they were in a power struggle, that really damaged this country. If the South had surrendered earlier and given in to a compromise of payment to the slaves and building the old south as an economical interest to be shared as a whole with the union and visa versa this would have been a better solution. The people that were working in the fields would have continued and been able to buy property and lived free as a part of the community, tell me what do we have today? All of that tragedy carried on as an excuse to rob the south and the European influence kept their hand in the kiddy dividing and conquering this country even to this day. Cuba, is a perfect example, south America, France, Germany? the same old story they all have relatives here in government and banks and industry doing trade divisions in the far east and middle east.etc., The whole objective of that war was to take control of our country from the South, that is exactly why Lincoln was assasinated , they thought we would crumble, but we did not. The outsiders won they divided and conquered us completely. All for the money! They took so much gold out of the South it was no joke.
That is why we changed completely over to silver. We are always being duped, and unfortunately we the people are easily led like sheep to slaughter because we generally call people crazy when we talk conspiracy, but we are not crazy, look at the facts? France lost Louisiana and they got even in the Civil war financially, and so on with all the rest. Spain sponsored the South as well and stole so much gold and drove it into Mexico where the French went as well.

No doubt in my mind -- the Confederacy lost the war. If you look at all of the major variables: population, wealth, industrial capacity, etc, the North is fated to win in a war of attrition. This should have been apparent to the Confederate leadership.

The only real advantage the Confederacy had was military leadership. Since the days of George Washington the South had a strong martial tradition; and by the dawn of the Civil War the vast majority of the army's officer corp was southern. If the South was going to win they had to strike hard, and strike early -- before the Union could bring its overhelming power to bear. Like a small man fighting a larger man -- the only way to win is to deliver a surprise "sucker punch" that drops the giant.

For political reasons, Jefferson Davis would not allow this. He was counting on assistance from Britain, and believed he would not get it if the Confederacy was branded as the "aggressor" in the fight. He was also counting on the need of British textile mills for southern cotton to bring them into the war. He was wrong on both counts.

The only advantage the south had was leadership and fighting spirit; and if they had brought both out quickly they could have defeated the Union before it could properly mobilize. Their failure to capitalize on that advantage cost them the war.

Good queston. Cheers, mate.

If I get your meaning, the Union won. The Confederacy would have been happy to be left alone, both on philosophic grounds and in that they were quite aware of their lack of an industrial base and a disadvantage in communications and transportation. The average boy in butternut fought as well as his Northern cousin, despite perhaps having a worn-out musket and no shoes, and southern generalship is legendary. But the South knew its cause would be lost barring foreign intervention, and only the most optimistic can have thought their chances of bringing the British into the war were good.

It's not a simple black and white answer. For sure the industrial might of the north won the war, they had superior numbers to keep their armies in the field well supplied; however, the south lost key battles, most notably at Gettysburg, where they couldn've achieved victory for their cause. If Lee had T.Jackson at Gettysburg, the high ground most likely would've been taken and history would've been changed. As it was, Lee's many tactical blunders at Gettysburg, especially in ordering 12,000 virginians to futilely attack over open ground against massed artillery. Due to his blunders, the Confederacy lost the Civil War.

There are no winners in any war. Having said that, it is clear the North (Union) won(?) the war between the States because they achieved their objective i.e to keep the Union whole and not allow the South to secede from the USA.

Coming from a family on both sides, that had kin on both sides, I have to say the south definitely lost. States rights, freeing the slaves, and whatever side issues there were, something was definitely settled. Pick any generation you want, we will never try secession again. So I figure we lost. Killing Yankees was not the point. We were definitely good at that. They still imposed their strategic will on us and on the future of this country.

the south won!!! listen we teach that u won so that u would keep the textile mills together to process our cotton. heres how i know we won, the south is warm, the north is not. if the north won the war they would have switched places. instead we feed yall a lie to keep yall happy about the war.
