E-bay usually provides you with the cost to ship an item based on its weight. You can find boxes readily available at your local UPS store.
When I sold things on e-Bay I would ship them through the UPS store, but you can go to the store, and just purchase the boxes if you would like to ship from home.

when you make a listing on ebay, on the shipping section you can sellect to charge a flat fee for shipping or you can do it by weight + destination
usually, it is good to know the weight of the item, or rather what the item your selling will weight AFTER it's been packaged, then you put that weight in the the little box in the shipping section when you're making your listing, and ebay will do all the work for you in calculating how much it will cost you ship the item, if you put that weight there or put a flat fee, when the auction closes, the shipping charges will be automatically added to the buyers total, otherwise if you just say in your listing that you will charge $xx.xx for shipping, customers might now want to pay or they might have already sent you payment for the item but not for shipping etc... so it's generally good to use the shipping section on the listing page; also, in that section you will get too choose what kind of shipping service you want to offer buyers [you have a choice of different USPS and UPS services, but be aware that Media Mail should ONLY be used for books, videogames and movies, if you ship other stuff using media mail and USPS finds out you'll get fined big time]
usually, it's good to offer at least Parcel Post and Priority Mail, some people offer Express Mail too but it's expensive so rarely people use it, you don't lose anything for offering different services
i've never used UPS so I don't know about boxes for their service and stuff BUT if you're using USPS [u.s. postal service] and will be shipping through Priority or Express Mail you can get FREE boxes from them either at the post office or online [from usps.com or from ebay. the ebay boxes are still boxes from usps but they also say "ebay" on them]
don't try to use this boxes to mail through another service that isn't priority or express by covering the box cuz usps knows their boxes and you might either get fined and/or charged the shipping rate for priority or express
UPS, as far as i know doesn't provided free boxes, and depending from which UPS store you're shipping from prices might vary because many of the shipping centers are independently owned and they can charge you whatever they want for shipping supplies and can charge extra fees. that's why i don't ship UPS
depending on what you're shipping you can just get a use box and recycle it. when i ship hardcover textbooks, i strip a cardboard box open and make a custom sized box for just the book, if shipping clothes or something that can absorb smells or humidity, i usually wrap it in a plastic bag first then put it in any other box i can find that isn't too beat up, or dirty. or i recycle the boxes in which my books from amazon and bn came in, i just strip out any labels or cover them up entirely w/ black marker
last time i used one of the big popcorn boxes and covered w/ a paperbag i grabbed from the grocery store
another time, i needed a pretty big box, so i grabbed a diaper box, put the clothes in it and covered it up w/ paperbag, i've also turned boxes inside out and taped them tight.
paying for boxes usually isn't worth the extra expense if you can come up w/ something just as good and for free
