If you are on birth control pills, maybe you had breakthrough bleeding. If you are not breakthrough bleeding, some women spot when they ovulate, some women spot when the fertilized egg implants in the uterine lining, and sometimes you spot just because you spot. I'd call your doctor in the morning if you're really concerned. It's also important to note that unless you are on birth control pills, it's possible to get your period earlier and later than usual due to stress changing the date you ovulate.
