I was not only forced to read it in college, but also the Iliad.
After the final I promptly shoved all of what I read to the far dark inner regions of my brain where I can only use it to answer Jeopardy questions.

I like the Iliad a lot, and the Aeneid. The Odyssey is fun but I haven't read it nearly as much as the Iliad. I'll have to edit to give you which translations I have, but alas, all three are in Anthologies, not stand alone. But I do have a really nice copy each of Gilgamesh, The Divine Comedy, The Song of Roland, Beowulf, etc. And the nice books really made a difference for some of the works that I wasn't a fan of originally. Gilgamesh and Beowulf being the two I'm thinking of. It's amazing how much difference a nice book can make.

Illiad is a far superior book than the Odyssey, but I suppose it all depends on the translation you read. For an alternative (long, complicated...but utterly fantastic) version of the Odyssey, read Ulysses, by James Joyce. It'll rock your face.

It's a lovely story...very different from the Illiad, as it deals with loneliness and fidelity.
