Amy is right. They also help prevent the material inside from lumping up (very similar to "fluffing" or punching, lol, you're pillow to keep a good form).

I know that the first time you hear about putting tennis balls or clean tennis shoes in the dryer with your coat, you have to be sure you read the tag wrong. Ha Ha But the reason that the tag instructs you to do this is because your coat is filled partially with down (feathers.) What happens in the dryer is when the coat is tumbling around inside, the tennis balls will "beat" the feathers and will cause them to plumb back up after being wet. This will result in your coat being nice and fluffy when it is fully dry again and it will also result in the coat being nice and warm. Be sure that the coat gets completely dry after washing. If you don't get it really dry you could damage the "down" and it might never be right again. The tennis balls work....trust me!

The tennis balls pummel the garment and keep it from twisting or bunching up which prevents sleeves for example from drying as quick as the rest. Also if there is a thermal lining or a quilted one, it helps to keep it from packing, bunching or settling. The wear and tear of tumble drying the item is minimized as it helps it dry faster. This is good for comforters or quilts also.

That is so the jackets will get drier faster. The tennis balls are so the jackets will not bunch up and get twisted with the other jackets. Keeps them separated...

it also works for comforters. it makes sure that they do not get all folded up and wrapped around itself. this way they dry quicker. for ex. if you put a sock in the dryer and it's folded up in itself it won't come out dry. if you make sure that it's not folded it will be dry.

it makes a really cool sound! also, they fluff up the fill material, allowing the fill to trap more air, increasing the insulation value of the jacket.

but the sound is really the thing.. try baseballs sometime!
