OK I am confused I just answered a question about a four year anniversary gift for your boyfriend and you are thinking about contacting your ex? OK the electronic gift for your current boyfriend...an electronic black book complete with all his exes.
For you an electronic retroactive video machine to remember what you ex did to you.
And for your ex...well he seems to have all the "gifts" he needs. I am not trying to be mean but someone is going to get hurt here. Please be careful and think things through...look at me I am sincerely hoping this is an honest question. Again please be careful you were hurt before DO NOT DO THE SAME THING to your current boyfriend. You sound very nice....please stay that way..

It depends on what the circumstances were when you broke up...did he cheat, did he abuse you or did you two just decide that it wasn't the right time?

If it was a mutual break up and you wanted to remain friend, then yes, give him a call just to see how he is. If you are just missing a bad relationship, don't dial that number.

It depends on whether or not he is with someone else and whether or not it would cause problems if you called him.

Maybe you should e-mail him and see if he writes back. Or, if he's not seeing anyone, take a shot and give him a call. I have done this in the past and it worked out. Just keep it light at first, unless he indicates that he's interested.

I don't think there is anything wrong with still having contact with your ex. If you and him have a close relationship why not call him and see how he is doing.

This fact indicate that your ground for break up did not had valid ground.
Still your question is not complete. If you have separated recently it is normal; and it gets away by time.

However, if you make a mistake; then you must tell ASAP!
