There are conferences like say the BIG-10.
They make up a lot of the schools in the midwest. There are many rivalry games and they play each other pretty much once a year. Then, there are conference championships. These decide the best team in the conference. Ohio State won since it had the best record in conference play and since well...it was the only undefeated team in football.

They have confrences and divisions according to location. They like to group all the teams along the atlantic coast into the ACC (atlantic coastal confrence) and teams along the southern part of the country into the SEC (south eastern confrence). There are alot of confrences but thers to many to list. All the teams in the confrence should play eachother atleast once. The team with the best record against their confrence teams will win the confrence. If there is a tie its who ever won the head to head match-up.
