The other answers are great, but also she was PUBLICLY HUMILIATED at the altar. She couldn't possibly stay when everyone knew that Rochester was married. She had her reputation to worry about and Bronte always takes great pains to let us know that Jane was plain in an effort to compensate for the fact that she is an unchaperoned woman living in a man's house. That is also why she is a governess. But, look at it from Jan'es point of view....he had been LYING to her (or not telling the whole truth, or avoiding the truth) and she was hurt and upset. Would YOU stick around??? Bronte also does it so that Jane finally finds good fortune and wealth and Rochester learns humility through the fire and his subsequent scarring. If I remember correctly, Rochester was also chasing someone else earlier in the book (when Jane was playing the gypsy fortuneteller). Finally, marriage was "until death do us part" so his wife had to be conveniently killed in order to allow them to marry.

1. cheetah
2. don't know
3. don't know
4. BOY was the young man's name,
Tarzan, a character created by Edgar Rice Burroughs, first appeared in the 1912 novel Tarzan of the Apes, and then in twenty-three sequels. He is the son of a British Lord and Lady, marooned on the coast of Africa by mutineers. His parents died when he was an infant, and he was raised by Great Apes of a species unknown to science. Kala is his ape mother. Tarzan (White-skin) is his ape name; his English name is John Clayton, Lord Greystoke (per Burroughs; Earl of Greystoke per later, non-canonical sources, notably the 1984 movie Greystoke). As a young adult, he meets Jane, and when she returns to America he leaves the jungle in search of his true love. Tarzan and Jane marry, and he lives with her for a time in England. They have one son, Jack, who takes the ape name Korak. Tarzan is contemptuous of the hypocrisy of civilization, and he and Jane return to Africa where, both being immortal, they still live. Along with Doc Savage and Sherlock Holmes, Tarzan is one of the cornerstones of the Wold Newton family created by Philip José Farmer.

And I remember when Johnny Weismeller was Tarzan, he also was Mr. Universe at one time. A little Trivia here.

Weissmuller starred in six Tarzan movies for MGM with actress Maureen O'Sullivan as Jane. The last three also included Johnny Sheffield as Boy. Then, in 1942, Weissmuller went to RKO and starred in six more Tarzan movies. Sheffield appeared as Boy in the first five features for that studio. Another co-star was blonde actress Brenda Joyce, who played Jane in Weissmuller's last four Tarzan movies. In a total of twelve Tarzan movies, Weissmuller earned an estimated $2,000,000 and established himself as the best-known of all the actors who have ever portrayed Tarzan. Although not the first Tarzan in movies (that honour went to Elmo Lincoln), he was the first to be associated with the now traditional ululating, yodeling Tarzan yell. (During an appearance on television's Mike Douglas Show in the 1970's, Weissmuller explained how the famous yell was created. Recordings of three vocalists were spliced together to get the effect--a soprano, an alto, and a hog caller!)
