I agree! I think that it is disgusting that half of the worlds countries are facing an obesity epidemic and the other half are literally starving to death.
One person may not be able to change the world, but you can change the world for one person. Sponsor a child in Africa, support charities, talk to anyone who will listen about the African situtation. Volunteer to work overseas with an aid agency. Have a fundraising event.
If everyone made just a small effort, big things can happen.

Consider Daniel Quinn's ideas about spreading our help outside our own community. Imagine that we have a surplus of food crops (which we do) and we sell them cheap to third world countries in Africa (which we do). What does that do to their population? Well, people are made of food, so it will increase. What does that do to their farmers? They will not be able to compete with the surplus prices of American food, and they will be driven out of business. Now, the population may have quadrupeled, and their ability to support themselves has gone down. Suppose we then have a year of drought, and we produce very little food. The people in the U.S. will have plenty, but we won't have a surplus and therefore won't dump it on other countries. But unfortunately we have taken out their incentive to grow their own food, and increased their population, so what may have started out as a small problem is now a catastrophe in which millions are dead. Are we really helping them by dumping food on them? I say we help by teaching them how to support themselves

The main hindrance is lack of organization. People with missionary zeal can only help to fight against hunger, illiteracy, health issues. I agree with you that we need to help all the people that are in need irrespective of their nationalities. The cost of organizing should be kept to minimum(negligible) so that amount donated reaches to needy. There are many examples of people who spend their entire life in fighting against the sufferings of poor people.

Why should we help them or anyone else?
Why not fix things in our own country instead?
