My hamster has a black lump on her back and i heard they are called mites. She is also losing some fur. Her skin is rough and the hair doesnt feel soft anymore. Its been like this for a few weeks. Will it eventually go away? Will the hair grow back? my dad wont take it to a vet because its costs a lot. If i dont do anything, will my hamster die?

IF IT HAS MITES, YES IT WILL DIE! MITES ARE LIKE FLEAS, THEY SUCK ALL THE BLOOD! ARE YOU SURE IT HAS MITES? MITES ARE VERY TINY! A LUMP MEANS IT MAY HAVE A TUMOR FILLED WITH BLOOD! I BET IT'S OLD, DEFINITELY OVER 1 YEAR OLD! IF IT DOES HAVE MITES-TOTALLY SANITIZE CAGE & ALL ACCESORIES WITH STRONG BLEACH(SHOULD KILL MITES), PUT KITTEN FLEA POWDER UNDER BEDDING! REPEAT IN 10 DAYS & REPEAT IN ANOTHER 10 DAYS & THAT SHOULD TAKE CARE OF EGGS? KEEP CAGE CLEAN & YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE MITES! IF YOU CAN NOT FIND KITTEN FLEA POWDER, TRY SEVEN DUST, IT IS A GARDENING PRODUCT & JUST DUST BOTTOM OF CAGE, OH YA BY THE WAY SOAK ALL ACCESSORIES IN BLEACH FOR 10 MINUTES!

Wow you are in a tough situation...this little guy does need to be seen by a vet. Normally the examination fee is anywhere from $20-$40. Could you work extra or use future holiday money?
A black lump does not sound like mites to me.
This is mites
When small "dots" are seen moving on the hamster and it is scratching excessively, the normal cause is mites, which can be caught from other hamsters or even bedding material.

It sounds more like this
Both internal and external cancerous tumors can develop. The external tumors are generally noticed as a hard lump that grows rapidly. It is possible for a veterinarian to successfully remove external tumors. However, internal tumors are not normally diagnosed early enough for surgical intervention. Symptoms include weight loss and a general appearance of being ill.
Good Luck!

If you've only had the hamster a few weeks, then most likely the mites came from the pet store. The mites are not going to go away without treatment and they will make it get anemia. If you got the mites from the pet shop then they should give you medicine for free. Mites in hamsters usually come from bad husbandry, in other words, low cleaning standards.

If you can't take your hamster to the vet, take it to the nearest pet store - not the chainwides, but a local, small run pet store that isn't fancy and doesn't look great, but they have wonderful knowledge. If there are mites, you can use a spray and disinfectant made for caged animals. Use with caution. If this is mange, a vet appointment will be necessary.

When I owned chins, I placed their food and bedding in the freezer to kill any potential critters and kept it there as a storage place. Only purified bottled water, or you can boil your own at home to purify it. Hope this helps.

Mites can make your hamster feel very sick. Mites usually do not go away on their own. Without taking care of the mites the hair will not grow back either. yes, your hamster could die from this

One black lump doesn't sound like mite to me, maybe a tick if it is a parasite. You need to find out exactly what is wrong with her and get the lump looked at, if it's not a parasite it could be a tumor. The fact her fur is falling out and is losing condition says this is affecting her health, she really needs help asap.

I wouldnt worry about it, there are a number of things that could cause this besides mites. If you changed his bedding brand recently he could just be getting used to it. Or maybe if you changed his food brand it could be a small reaction although that would be very rare. My guess is he just has one really bad itch that he cant scratch just right haha hope this helps!

Ask you dad to check the pet store for an over the counter medication.

Clean his cage and everything in it with soap and bleach. Allow to dry completely before putting him back in his cage.
