I had Norton Anti virus but is not really good, because when I installed to my computer It did not scan all of the files and I had like 17 virus.
you may want to get McAfee that is the best If you have comcast High Speed Internet Its free you can call comcast or go to www.comcast.com and chat with a person that works at comcast and ask how you can get McAfee for free! But If you don't have comcast you can buy McAfee at Best Buy for $79.99 or less!

I'd go with AVG over Norton any day. AVG will not give you any bugs and to top it off it's free. If you feel like paying money for an anti-virus you can always get AVG pro and get advanced features, like multiple schedules. As for me, I have the AVG Free edition and I have it set to get updates and scan daily and it protects my computer just as well as a commercial anti-virus.

XP has that's personal firewall notwithstanding zonealarm loose firewall is extra valuable. As for AVG anti-virus application, you do comprehend that it really is a very negative AV application & it should not be lengthy in the previous your asking the question "help i have were given an outbreak & AVG received't get rid of IT" - Get youeself a extra valuable AV application.

I've used AVG for years and swear buy it. No Anti-virus is full proof, but AVG is free and uses small CPU load. You can download AVG here.

You should also run a Firewall and Anti Spy ware software as well.

A free and great firewall is ZoneAlarm. It can be downloaded here

Lastly AntiSpyware software, I use Ad-Aware and Spybot Seach and Destroy. Both are free.

Ad-Aware Free can be found here

http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5

Spybot Search and Destroy can be found here

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Lastly I would recommend you run Mozilla instead of internet net explorer, it's safer and faster. It can Downloaded here

http://www.mozilla.org/products/mozilla1.x/

In short you can stay very secure on the internet and do it for free.
I use all the above programs and install them on all the machines I work on with the owner's permission of course. Hope that helps.

Both AVG and Avast are good virus scanners. With the AVG, you have to hunt a little on the website to find the free version. They keep moving it in the hope of selling you the paid version instead.

in this day and age,... you probobly need an anti virus... and a firewall....

avg is free (but there is a catch...) but it does not include a firewall (which is only avaliable if you fork out the $$$)

your best bet... is pay for a combo pack... antivirus/firewall.... since you were a user of norton av,... i recomend you get norton internet security (av/firewall/parentle control/anti adware/spyware/etc.etc.)

or you can just go for the free avg, up to you. at very least have somthing to protect your computer.

The free version of Avg is pretty much average, it failed some critical tests. A ton of people like it but that does not mean anything to me. I do comparison analysis and it did not do well.
Avast is pretty solid for a free program.
The better programs are not the popular ones such as NOD32, or Kaspersky, Trend Micro, McAfee anti virus.
