Actually, in this case I don't think the word "about" makes the answer ambiguous. The answer implies the product should be 24,000, rounded to the nearest thousand. Given that, 27 * 28 * 29 is "about" 22,000, while 29 * 30 * 31 is "about" 27,000.

Well, "about 24,000" leaves some room for interpretation.

The best way to figure out 3 consecutive numbers whose product is "about 24,000" is just to take the cube root of 24,000. It's 28.85, which is "about 29" (closer to 29 than 28), so I'd probably pick 28, 29, and 30 as the three consecutive numbers whose product is closest to 24,000. Their product is 24,360.

Call the first number "n." Since the numbers are consecutive, we have n, (n+1), and (n+2). Multiply n*(n+1)*(n+2) to get the product of three consecutive numbers and set it equal to 24,000. Solve for "n". Put this number back into (n+1) and (n+2) and ya got it

³√(24,000 ) ≈ 28.8449

This would make me try numbers around 28.
#1) (28)(29)(30) = 24,360 --- Too high...
#2) (27)(28)(29) = 21,924 --- Too low...

#1 is 360 away from 24,000
#2 is 2,076 away from 24,000

Answer: The numbers 28, 29, and 30, when multiplied, are "about" equal to 24,000.

The way to approach this problem:

Take the cube root of 24, 000, it's a little less than 30. (28.8)

Now, try

27,28,29-> too small
28,29,30-> too large,

So, there's no solution. I guess that what you meant by 'about'.

for 24000 or any number, approx answer is cuberoot it.
24000^(1/3) gives 28.845..
so nearest is 28,29,30
