You know what? Those who are not your friends probably don't care enough to criticize your dancing.

I understand what you mean! When I was younger, I had no inhibitions about dancing alone in my living room. But when it came time to go to a dance, I'd get all self-conscious even 'tho I was actually an ok dancer.

Try this: practice at home in front of one really trusted, close friend. Try not to think about the fact that you are being watched.

When you go out among more people, just take a deep breath and tell yourself you can do it, that you are as good (or better than!) anybody else out there.

Take your mind off yourself. Just go w/the music and...have fun!!

THINK - what a waste of talent! Am a good dancer, you believed (which is very important). Sad thing is you didn't have the chance to show-off (scared of people watching). THINK - would you want your talent wasted? I guess not! Tell yourself you can, and you will. Ignore the people watching, focus on your dancing and the world (of dancing) you're in and dance your best. With some applause and appreciation, you'll feel better (and better) and this fear will be a thing of the past ;-) Enjoy what you're doing :-)

part of being a dancer is having poise and confidence.

you say you believe that you are a good dancer, so why are you worried about it?

the trick that ALWAYS works for me is imagine you are in a studio dancing...all alone. and that no one is there. just you the floor and the music.

another one is...just try to imagine other people TRYING to do what you do. dancing takes AHECKOFALOT of talent. remember that dancing is hard and that a LOT of people (if not most) cannot do what dancers can do.

just believe in yourself and don't doubt.

good luck. be beautiful!

I had the same problem when I was younger, I think its something you can grow out of, but what I would do is dance in front of my family, and friends, and I joined a dance team. It really brought me out of my shell because I had to dance in front of people all the time! I also would stay at dance class late, and turn out all the lights, and just dance in the dark, and then do exactly what I did with the lights off in the light. It really helps. Just have fun!

The only way to get over it is to realize mentally that you need to develop good stage presence to be a good dancer. To do that, you should perform at any opportunity available. Just think of it as experience. Everyone is too wrapped up in their own world to really care what happens to you on stage anyways. Or anyone for that matter, not just you, sorry.

Hey, I feel you but only thing is all my family knows I'm very talented I just tend to hide it from my friends since I have this goofy rep, so yeah practice in front of your parents!

I always drag my mom in my room and make her sit there and watch me perform and afterwards I ask for HONEST advice not "Oh honey how cute!" In which its nothing wrong with compliments but if we dont here the truth we'll never grow into something better

I think you should learn to trust your friends and to not care if you are being watched, i think if you are passionate about dancing, then you should not care about the audience and what they think about you, if you claim you are a really good dancer then so be it... if you believe in yourself and dont care what others think, you should be fine!;)

~good luck~

Okay what I would do is be confident and it sounds like you are shy to talk to people to so what I would do is go to the Skating Rink on Friday. They are always dancing that is what I would do. Just try not to be shy. love your bfffl.
