I just told them I was emigrating and I wanted to cancel my contract. They did mention a charge, but I politely reminded them that I had been a customer for 10 years and that they didn't know where i was going anyway. They let me off.

Whether you think it's fair or not, you still signed the contract for XX amount of time. If you don't abide by the contract, you have to pay a termination fee. Sprint isn't making you move to Mexico, are they?

Contact Sprint. Explain the situation. Often they just want to keep you happy and will waive the termination fee. This is especially true if you are a long time customer with a good payment history.
