You can access ALL of your information with your SIN. NO ONE can legally ask you for it in the USA, EXCEPT for the government and your employer (and only then for tax purposes). Do NOT give it out. That's the #1 cause of identity theft!

what did you purchase?

I was once IDed at wal-mart for trying to purchase a pamphlet on knitting Afghans (the blankets) from the self checkout. I should have refused but at the time it didn't occur to me what was going on.

I've never heard of a SIN number, unless you meant SSN?

As long as you did NOT give them your Social Security Number.

It is illegal for a business to ask for your SIN for any reason.
