To solve this, you have to get the fractions into forms with the same denominator. (That's the number on the bottom. Has your teacher been talking about "least common denominators" lately? This is what (s)he was referring to.) The simplest way to do this is to just multiply both the top and the bottom of each fraction by the other fraction's denominator. In other words, multiply 1/2 by 3/3 to get 3/6, and multiply 1/3 by 2/2 to get 2/6. Now that both fractions are expressed in sixths, you can add the sixths together just like you'd add anything else. Two sixths plus three sixths are five sixths. The answer is 5/6.

1/2 + 1/3
1/2 can be rewrite as 3/6
an 1/3 can be rewrite as 2/6
so, 3/6+2/6 =(3+2)/6
which is equal to 5/6
or
cross Multiplication
(i.e.,) 1/2 * 3 and 1/3 * 2
which is eqaul to 3/6 and 2/6
therefore 1/2+1/3 = 3/6+2/6=5/6.
If u have not yet understand the answer ask one more time and i will explain in much detail.
