Ferrets typically sleep 18 hours PER day. That is normal. Also, if you have geriatric/senior ferrets, they will also sleep alot more than the 18 hours. Additionally, ferrets are NOT lazy creatures and they don't "hybernate" as some people on this board think. I've had ferrets for many, many years and about 18 hours per day IS normal no matter what time of year it is.

While it is true that ferrets sleep a lot, too much sleeping can also be a sign of poor nutrition or illness. The ferret should be waking occasionally throughout the day to eat, drink and play in little spurts. Older and younger ferrets sleep more. The National Ferret Association can give you tips on commercial foods that are not good to feed your ferret. A healthy ferret shouldn't need supplements of any kind either. Fish should be the first ingredient in the food. The ferret should not be thin either.

Ferrets do like to sleep a lot, but lethargy can also be a sign of an underlying illness. Watch your ferret like a hawk for changes in behavior. If in doubt, a trip to the vet may be due.

Ferrets sleep for 20 hours a day.

It has nothing to do with winter, hibernation, illnesses, etc. They just need a LOT of sleep, year round.

Its winter, so animals are going to start sleeping more. My bearded dragon lizards are in whats called brumation. They sleep through the whole winter without eating or drinking.

I sleep all the time and Im fine!!!
