This will sound cliche, but it's true. Academic success to me is defined by you knowing that you tried your best and the grade you recieved is truly as good as you can do. If you have to make excuses or find reason for yourself then you werent successful.

RE:
what is your definition of academic success?

To me academic success is studying hard, always studying, gaining degrees after degrees, then finding a good paying job that uses your certificates and knowledge. I have seen many academics who fail miserably at life. They are terrific at their job, but they have spent so much time trying to succeed in this area that other areas of their life have been ignored. Academic, means studying facts, theories....it doesnt mean instant success. I think there should be a good balance between academic success and personal success. A lot of academics are not happy people.....so they may be academically successful, but they sure as hell are not life proficient and dont know how to be. I think you need to speak to the wives/husbands of these "academic successes" to find out whether they consider their spouse a success...I bet in the majority of cases they would consider their spouse to be a failure at life and what it throws at us. I bet they have many of their needs unmet their entire lives.

In my opinion, its fulfilling or exceeding your potential.

Say for example you have two children. One has a maximum potential of straight A's and the other has a maximum potential of straight C's. I've always thought that if the kid with the potential of the A's comes home with a report card of 3 A's and 3 B's, and the other comes home with a report card of all C's, the kid with the C's should be given more praise.

Some people are just gifted and can breeze through school and become a brain surgeon. Some people need to bust their butts just to get an associates degree. I'd consider the later of those two a bigger success.

Call me crazy; just my opinion.
