Without knowing the environment your fish is living in, it's hard to answer your questions correctly. To be fair, you need to tell us how big it is and how it's living (pond, tank, size, location, etc). Please don't try keeping it in a 1 gal tank. Koi can grow to impressive sizes and need something larger than that. You'll jsut stunt his growth.

Food--Go to your nearest fish speciality pet store and ask them to show you where the Koi food is and look at the sizes. You don't want to feed it anything bigger than it's mouth if you are feeding pellet foods.

Algae Disks--A koi might try a disk, but algae disks are meant for bottom feeders and plecos, because the disks "create" algae when there isn't enough to sustain the plecos (the algae suckers that help keep tanks clean).

Recommendation--Anything in a pellet. My oscar and cichlids never liked flake foods themselves, and the pellets just seem to keep the water a little cleaner than flake food did.

Good luck!

Koi like all carp are primarily veggie eaters. Chances are the algae wafers you have are a bit big for your little guy. Break it up into small pieces for him.

I feed my babies a variety of foods. They have a lettuce clip for romaine- although the snails normally finish that off. They also like steamed zucchini and an orange slice occasionally. I give them shelled peas at least once a week. This keeps them regular and helps prevent swimbladder problems.

If you feed pellets you should let them soak before feeding this will make thm sink. Koi tend to gulp a lot of air at the surface if their food floats. This can lead to swimbladder issues. Flakes can be feed just below the surface.

A koi cannot be kept in a one gallon tank- I know you didn't say he was- but just in case. This fish needs a lot of room to live a healthy long life.

In response to other answers- NEVER feed them bread, they love algae wafers and they are good for them. As I said before these fish should have primarily veggies. Normal fishfood is very high in protein and leads to constipation if they are not given extra veggie matter- algae wafers.

We have over 50 very large healthy Koi (about a foot and a half long) and we feed them cat bisciuts and bread. The cat biscuits give them all the vitamins and minerals they need. We have not had One single fish die in 15 years. You could try this or there are websites for Japanese Koi if you don't want to feed your fish with these things. Koi are very hardy fish and I know that everyone that has them feeds them these things. I hope this helps ;-)
