It's completely your choice. If you feel more comfortable with a male doctor, see one.

I see a male gyno because he's a good doctor and he's seen me through some pretty tough times and been very supportive.

I have had female gynos that were absolutely terrible, to the point where I felt I had been sexually abused by them.

So pick a doctor that's good, and that you feel comfortable with. There's no special rule on it.

I think it's natural to feel slightly uncomfortable, and it's definitely not anything to be embarrassed about, nor it is a reflection on your sexuality. I think the best question for you to ask is whether you would just be slightly uncomfortable but able to deal with it OK, or whether you'd be SO uncomfortable as to keep you from participating effectively in the examination (answering the doc's questions appropriately, remembering the questions you intended to ask, feeling comfortable addressing your questions to a female doc, etc.) If you think any of those matters would be difficult for you, then, for the sake of your exam accomplishing its intended purpose, ask for a male doc. Again, there's no need to be ashamed if that's the case, or if you just feel more comfortable with a man examining you. But, as other answers have said, the woman doc will (most likely) be very professional and go out of her way not to embarrass you or make you feel awkward in any way, even if it does "stand at attention" or experience some other involuntary awkward response.

Good luck...

i have a unique insite on this answer. i am a 1st year medical student and I can say that we are quickly taught to just see the body pretty much as a machine and not think anything of the genitalia...with that said i can say that its still really weird to be addressing this issue. a friend of mine was feeling for the femoral pulse on a practice patient and accidentally touched his balls...and she said she was extremely nervous and got all flustered. so basically i think this...with a young doctor, there still might be some kind of "haha its a penis" going on inside her and or his head...once the doc has been practicing medicine for a couple years that pretty much goes away. by the way, i have a penis.

i wouldn't worry about a female doctor they are professionals and handle it professionaly...a female doctor has the same training a male doctor has but if you feel more comfortable with a male go for a male doctor...i feel more comfortable with female ob/gyn verses a male just because of the accusations of molestation from male doctors and the alarming rate at which that is growing...but do what makes you feel comfortable..that's all that matters especially if you feel like you would with hold information from a female doctor about a problem because you feel uncomfortable.and maybe even be diagnosed wrong because you didn't tell her everyting....get a doctor you can feel comfortable with

I had a female doctor once. When she was inspecting down there the last time I saw her, it "stood at attention" (just happened wasn't on purpose) and needless to say it was a very awkward situation.....

No, she's a doctor - why should it be a problem? Women go to male doctors, so why shouldn't you see a female doctor?

I got no problem with it if she looks good. don't want no ugly female doctor looking at my penis or having any ideas about it.
