I memorize them by when I say the word, if I hear the letter I am trying to determine is long or short,it is long, like the word "make" for instance, I hear the "a" sound, so it's long a. Or the word "long" I don't hear the "o" sound so it's short, but if the word were "home", I hear the "o" so it's long "o" in the word home. I hope this helps.

You can try using flash cards and put a - over the long vowels and a u over the short ones.
