As most of the answers here imply... it will most likely put some local small businesses in a hard place, but many, many people will derive a benefit of lower prices, more varied products, a new cheap pharmacy (maybe), and a place for employment.

Also, lots of folks from nearby smaller towns will be making the trip to your town so that could spur other economic activity (gas stations, restaurants, realestate).

On the flip side, look at what Wal-Mart is doing to the broader ecomomy, with the influence it has on global suppliers... true they are driving down prices across the supply chain, but that drives profits out of those lines of business, and potentially over-seas.

Personally, I don't like what Wal-mart is doing to the economy, but see it as a natural evolution in a capitalist society. So, its not entirely bad. It can't last forever (check their stock prices based on latest profit forcasts), so that maybe is a silver lining.

In the short-term Wal-Mart is good for consumers because of the low prices. Taking a longer-range view, Wal-Mart is likely to run small local companies out of business because they can't compete. Also, although Wal-Mart provides jobs, they have a reputation for not treating their employees particularly well and being strongly opposed to organized labor.

In small towns, Wal Marts are good for the consumer, but bad for competing small businesses.

Depends on your point of view...if you're a business person then it's bad...you want all the money for yourself...if your an average Joe, then Wal-Mart is the place. Good prices for everyday items.

If it's really a small town then Walmart won't be there.

Yes it's good for the community because of extra tax revenue, and competitive pricing will drive prices down. They also provide jobs and as much as America hates them, they actually get more applicants than what they need.

Bad if you are competing against it.

All the local retailers will be freed from retailing. They will then be free to do any other type of job or business.
For the customers, they will have to get used to buying from Walmart, or from Walmart - no other choice

Good! They offer lots of jobs which usually pay more than mom & pop shops...plus lower prices for consumers. Competition's a good thing.
