There are many different kinds of job a sonographer can have. S/he can be a tech that works at hospitals/clinics or for research. S/he can also be an ultrasound instructor, marketing or application specialist (shows people new ultrasound equipment), or even an independent contractor.

If you like scanning, you can be a general tech (scans mostly abdomen, OB), vascular tech (blood vessels), or echo tech (heart).

Try calling the ultrasound department at your local hospitals or outpatient clinics to see if you can do an observation there.

Salary is dependent on where you live.

And it is a kind of dead end career - there are really no advancement positions unless one is creative.
