Other fish will eat algae wafers, including goldfish and koi.

Plecos love algae discs. They prefer to eat in the dark. They have raspy mouths to scrape away at the disc. I've never used that type of food on goldfish or koi. I keep Grass Carp in my outdoor pond. They do a good job. When feeding time comes the Carp join in with the other fish eating commercial food and are fairly large now.

I have both indoor and outdoor goldfish and koi. Neither one seems to like eating algae. They don't spend much time sucking the bottom of their aquarium or the pond. I give them a more nutritious diet of all season goldfish and koi food made by Laguna. It's tiny pellets that contain multi-vitamins, will not cloud the water, and is extremely palatable. My friend's pleco eats the algae disks but not solely.

They are technically meant for sucker fish, but that doesn't mean others won't try to eat it - the problem is the way they're made is tough for other fish to really get to. That's why they sell spirulina algae flakes.
