Philosophers were the celebs of their day.

Judging by our current celebs I would hate to think what amazing thoughts they would come up with in the modern time.

I would instead look to film makers/writers/directors ect

Granted, not every movie is awe inspiring but from time to time a film comes along which dares to challenge peoples perceptions of the real (eg the Matrix)

Hardly the stuff of plato but I think its the closest we have to modern philosophers

Isn't everyone who can reason and listen a philosopher? It tends to be the more artistic types, writers artists who use expressive medium that become famous.

peter singer; read his stuff on animal liberation, pretty interesting,
david edwards:" burning all illusons,"good discourse on the idea of freedom
and of course noam chomsky. aside from being a critic of american foreign policy, he has great insights to the theory of language(linguistics). that is what he really is known for in the academic world.
