At a music recital the other day, I was sitting next to an elderly gentleman. During the intermission, I opened a bottle of water from my purse and a small pack of cookies. I offered the gentleman one, but he declined, and then, very coldly, he replied: No thank you. When I watch a Recital such as this, I get involved in the music, and I do not think about drinking or eating. I was so embarrassed! If this were you, what would you have answered?

The older generation have way different way of speaking. So he more than likely wasn't trying to be rude.
As for you eating and rinking. If it wasn't posted that drinking and eating were not allowed and it was during an intermission. then you did nothing wrong.

I would have said very well then and continued with your snack. It was during intermission. He probably wasn't trying to be rude just offer an explanation why he declined your offer. There was no need to be offended.

I would've been offended for only a minute than thought slyly to myself "geez he's a cranky old gizzard!"

Maybe he can't hear that well and what seemed impolite to you was just his normal way of responding.

I wouldn't have blinked about it.
