Do you think it's pathological or wrong to get a crush on a video game character? I mean they're obviously not real. But I just am in total awe of Baralai from Final Fantasy X-2 and Basch from Final Fantasy XII. (the newest one out now). Of course they remind me of somebody I know in real life, so they're not completely illusionary I guess.

To all the people that say I need to get a life where is this miraclous life YOU have.... only you don't, you're just being a judgmental prick that needs to think before they type something! If you had such a good life you wouldn't be on here too so shove it.

Thank you for all the positive, constructive comments.

It's not the fictional character you have a crush on, it's the personality, physical traits, attitude, manner of dress, etc. that you associate with the character that you are attracted to. It's not unhealthy to desire these qualities as long as you realize that it is not the actual character you have a crush on, but rather characteristics you'd like to see in your own partner. That is normal and it happens to all people when they watch movies/read books/etc. They admire particular qualities that particular characters possess. Not quite the same thing as a crush, but it can feel similar.

I'd recommend devoting that kind of attention to a real person though, and not let yourself get wrapped up in imaginary people. You may set yourself up for disappointment when you realize that real people often don't possess all the wonderfully flawless qualities of fictional characters.

Heavens, no.

When I was little, I used to tell everyone I was going to marry Bart Simpson. Throughout high school it was Trent Lane from the show Daria.

As far as video games, I'd probably go for Cloud from FFVII myself, although I must admit Baralai does have a rather dreamy voice. ;)

(And as a side note, I have a perfectly normal, healthy, long-term relationship with a boy who has admitted he's done the same thing. Haha.)

But, seriously, it's certainly no more harmful than developing a crush on a celebrity, but interestingly enough, what you're referring to is, for some reason, far more taboo. No one seems to mind admitting that they have a crush on Brad Pitt or Lindsay Lohan... some people even go so far as to flaunt it by wearing shirts that say "Mrs. Pitt," or whatnot.

The way I see it, your chances of ending up with a celebrity icon are about as good as they are of you ending up with a video game character. "But celebrities are REAL!" you might say. Sure they are, but the image they project to society isn't always. People who develop a crush on a celebrity are, in actuality, developing a crush on the image the celebrity (or in some cases, their manager) has decided to portray to their fans. Often times, these "images" are just as calculated and fabricated as that of a video game character.

And with the story depth the video games you're referring to contain, a lot of times, these characters are far more multi-dimensional than what you'll see of the personalities of your average one-dimentional celebrity icon.

Video game characters have voice actors... celebrity singers often lip-synch their songs. Video game characters have design artists, celebrities have makeup artists, wardrobe artists, professional trainers and diet coaches dogging their steps. What's the difference?

Also, we're not just talking about pixels and polygons with video game characters anymore. And, amusingly, I had a screenshot of Cloud from FFVII: Advent Children as the background on my computer, and all of my co-workers were asking me who he was, because he was "so hot." They thought he was a real actor.

Which brings me to my point... so, is it wrong to get a crush on a celebrity? Most people don't think so.

So, why would a video game character be any different?

It's common. I had a crush on Knuckles the Echidna for quite some time, although that could be worse than your situation, since Knux is an animal...ah well, I'm over it now. :) No, it's not wrong to love a video game character, it just means they did a good job making the character realistic.

I like Squall from Final Fantasy 8. But it isn't really a crush. I just kind of wish guys were more like him in real life I guess. Hahaha. So I sort of understand.

Oh my gosh! So not. Mine is worse! I'm in love with King Kong! He is such a man and he fully risks his life for the chick! Oh! He's such a man! Even though he's not, but you know what I mean. So definitely, there's nothing wrong with that!

Define "wrong".

Will it harm you? Probably not.
Will it harm anybody else? Probably not.

So no, it isnt wrong. But I wouldn't go around telling everybody things like that, people are all full of stereotypes.

Most people are "disgusting" in some way, just social norms make us keep our little things to ourselves.

You need to get a life and stop playing Final Fantasy for 2 or 3 years.

No. I was actually married to Zelda for five years. I knew she was sleeping around with Mario, but I finally left her when I found out about Donkey Kong Jr.
