well Limewire itself isn't illegal, but people can use it to download copyrighted material illegally. So technically they haven't done anything wrong. It's like using a car to commit a crime - it's not the car maker's fault so they can't shut them down.

Limewire hasn't been shut down because its not illegal.
Its a peer to peer program used for file sharing. Vets and doctors share info around the world using P2P.

Baseball bats are not illegal despite the fact that you can use them to hit someone. Cars are not illegal even though you can use them to run people over.

Limewire is legal.
Sharing copyrighted files is not. Its how you use the program that makes the difference and Limewire has no control over that.

Beacause Limewire itself is not illegal. When signing up for an account and downloading the software, you are forced to agreement that you will not use it for any illegal purposes. When people do, any legal action taken against them will be on themselves alone and not Limewire.

They operate out of foreign countries, so "shutting them down" takes a lot of time and paperwork. Limewire is part of the Kazaa network that sprung from Gnutella, all dutch run sights.

Technically Limewire isn't illegal because you're "sharing" songs with other people. I think that it should be illegal, as some people don't share any songs on it, but nevertheless it's considered legal.

I wonder that myself. My brother told me soon Limewire is going to have to start charging like the other ones, but it really doesn't seem like it would take them so damn long to do it. Seems like it could be done easily, but whatever....enjoy it while its free =P
