11 December, 1941 till 2 May, 1945 was the U.S. war with Germany and the Nazis, 20 March, 2003 till April 2003, It took only 21 days for the 'invasion' process, Baghdad falling on April 9. This is the general consensus on what the 'Invasion' was, if you are talking about the entire war, we do not know yet how long that will take. Vietnam was 15 years, so it could be a while.

Your comparing apples to oranges. You see, here is the differences in the two.

WW2- we carpet bombed Berlin, Tokyo, Rome and many other towns without regard for the people there. Artillery was fired where-ever the enemy was, because we were at war with a people, the Germans, the Italians and the Japanese.

Iraq- we are at war with a group of terrorists who, like Viet Nam, blend in with the general public, uses intimidation to control and run the public, to include killing woman, children and the elderly. Just like Nam, they come in and take out all the key people to cause confusion, terror and death. We on the other hand, try our best to be selective about our targets. We have a different set of rules to reduce collateral damage when the enemy don't care, the more blood the better.

In WW2, the rules of engagement were, find the enemy and destroy them. Ships, planes, trucks, trains, anything that moved. Damns were blown up and areas flooded killing thousands. The fire bombing of major cities in Japan, killed thousands.

In Iraq, we could carpet bomb, put in mine fields, napalm and all that, but then the innocent people we are trying to protect and give them a chance at having a government without the fear of extermination or going to prison for life.

If you look at history, you either take everyone and everything out, or you try to be selective and minimize the damage to the civilian population.
