We have a 5 1/2 year old goldfish that lost a few scales when he got stuck between the fish tank and the filter tube. He has a little red spot where the scales came off.

Yes, with time unless the damage is so great that it will just leave a scar. No, fish cannot live without their scales, it's like their skin! Goldfish are a coldwater fish, they heal a little faster as well.

Buy some Melafix to put in the tank (it comes in a blue bottle and can be found at petstores everywhere) and this will help speed up the process of your fish being healed. Unfortunatly, if he's not healed within a few weeks time, your fish will likely to go to god because his slime coat has been torn away and he will be suspectable to bacterial and viral infections, so act fast, and keep the water clean..

Yes. As long as the water quality is good and the fish are eating a quality food, the scales will grow back. The new scale might be a little smaller or different color, however.

Goldfish and koi living in a healthy environment are able to recover from minor physical damage, like accidental scale loss or split fins, quite easily. When water quality is poor or the pond or aquarium is over-stocked the fish’s immune system is suppressed. Under these conditions a minor injury can quickly become infected by bacterial or fungal pathogens. So the key for recovery is to maintain healthy conditions at all times.
