I'm in my teens and am feeling this erge to take up some guitar lessons. Just about everyone I know plays guitar, so I thought hey why not try it. Plus I love the sounds. Only I don't know which one is better, the acoustic or the electric. Since I'm a beginer I'm not sure which would be better. The acoustics I've heard take a little more effort to press down on the strings, therefore results take a little more effort and time. I've also heard that electrics are easier to learn but more expensive. I'm going to the local music store this weekend to look at some. Please tell me what I should look for, and whats best to start with. Thanks :)

Try them all. Different guitars have different shaped necks and fret boards that fit all different sized hands. Different guitar brands sound different than the rest. you'll find one that fits you and your style just right

Depends on the style of guitarist you want to be. Generally it's best to start acoustic because it's a lot easier to hear your mistakes. That's why it takes more effort and time: An electric guitarist won't hear as many of their mistakes (especially if playing with a distortion pedal or a high-gain amp) whereas an acoustic guitarist hears everything their hands are doing, both right and wrong. Sometimes even pro guitarists sound lousy on an acoustic. Plus it's cheaper to start out acoustic (sometimes, not always though).

On the other hand, all of that depends on if you want to be a guitarist who plays really perfectly with a really clean guitar sound. Let's face it, if you're going to play punk rock or metal and will play every song through a distortion pedal or high-gain amp anyway, you don't really need to play acoustic. Like with metal, a lot of the guitar techniques require things like distortion pedals to sound right, so you can't even learn them on an acoustic. In other words, if most of the music you like and want to play is played on an electric guitar, by all means, start with an electric.

If you're just starting out -- why not start out with a starter set? Just about every guitar company has a starter set that comes complete with a guitar, small practice amp, strings, pick, etc. for a low price. It'll cost about the same as a decent acoustic guitar. Then later, if you decide you want to upgrade, you can do so gradually. The trick is this: Get a starter set with a decent guitar. Avoid Squiers -- Fenders are great guitars, my favorite in fact, but Squiers (a company Fender owns) are terrible. First Acts are terrible too. I've heard that Washburn and Ibanez make decent starter sets.

I would buy an electric first off because it's easier to get used to pushing on the strings as a beginner, but mainly because electric guitar is way more versatile. dynamics play a bigger part when you play an electric, not that they aren't important on acoustic, but you have more control over your sound on electric. It also depends on what kind of music u want to play. Electric guitars aren't always more expensive. You can find some decent ones for just over a hundred, but you have to buy an amp(you don't have to, but its nice to be able to hear wat ur playing). You can get a practice amp for about 50 bucks. I don't know why I'm telling you all this. Anyways, Fender Strats are pretty good for beginners to use.
